Fascinating Fact
The tides along Maine's rocky coast are among the strongest in the world, ranging in height from 12 to 24 feet. Maine has 1,200 islands, some no more than rocky ledges while others serve as home bases to lobster men and summer vacationers. Maine's craggy, convoluted coast, when stretched out end to end, and including its many islands, is a close second to Alaska's unprecedented coastline.
Maine adopted a state flag in 1909. Their motto, "I direct," is featured on the flag and refers to the North Star, Maine having once been the northernmost state. On the flag's blue background is the coat of arms which bears symbols for agriculture, shipping, and forestry, as well as two men in Revolutionary War uniforms.
